Grab Your Readers and Keep the Action Going! 2-Week Intensive – Mary Marvella

October 20, 2025 @ 8:00 am - October 31, 2025 @ 5:00 pm

$35.00

Description:

Don’t you just love reading a scene about something happening and feel the scene skid to a stop?  Maybe the author stops a scene with a flashback for pages or a long conversation that doesn’t move the story along.
Are you guilty of describing all the dishes on the Thanksgiving table and arguing about recipes when Janice is supposed to tell her brother-in-law she’s pregnant with his kid? I’d skim to the anticipated action, and I wouldn’t trust you to keep me involved in the story.
Think about the fight scenes when one fighter has a flashback. Nope. The other fighter will beat the character whose attention has stayed. Let’s look at the things we do that slow our action and lose a reader’s attention, like describing every piece of furniture in a room.

Instructor Bio:

Mary has been a story teller since she could talk. As a child, Mary made the “Let’s Pretend” games. Now she and her characters play that same game, but her characters insist their stories are real. She taught Language Arts/English for 15 years and began writing books when she retired. She is Georgia bred and Georgia raised and wouldn’t live anywhere else. The times she tried she missed her southern roots. Mary’s daughter is her best project!

Mary aims at readers’ heart strings and loves to tease with sensuous scenes. Mary edits for freelance clients.  She Indie published 10 novels, a collection of Christmas stories, and a grammar book.

Teaching online classes and giving workshops makes Mary’s inner teacher happy. Helping folks take their ideas and turn them into books pleases Mary’s inner writer and her inner teacher. For the past 10 years, Mary has edited both memoirs and how-to books.

Mary has presented workshops with HHRW, OIWI/Outreach International, FF&P, Savvy Authors, A2P, Walton Writers, and for East Metro Atlanta Christian Writers, Moonlight & Magnolias conference, and The Southern Pen Indie Conference.

As a freelance editor, Mary has edited more than 80 books in different genres, including detective novels, memoirs, and how-to books.
