SUMMARY:Grab Your Readers and Keep the Action Going! 2-Week Intensive - Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nDon’t you just love reading a scene about something happening and feel the scene skid to a stop?  Maybe the author stops a scene with a flashback for pages or a long conversation that doesn’t move the story along.\n\nAre you guilty of describing all the dishes on the Thanksgiving table and arguing about recipes when Janice is supposed to tell her brother-in-law she’s pregnant with his kid? I’d skim to the anticipated action\, and I wouldn’t trust you to keep me involved in the story.\n\nThink about the fight scenes when one fighter has a flashback. Nope. The other fighter will beat the character whose attention has stayed. Let’s look at the things we do that slow our action and lose a reader’s attention\, like describing every piece of furniture in a room.\nInstructor Bio: \nMary has been a story teller since she could talk. As a child\, Mary made the “Let’s Pretend” games. Now she and her characters play that same game\, but her characters insist their stories are real. SUMMARY:Using Emotion to Make Your Protagonist\, Antagonist\, or Villain Memorable - Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: \nStories have main characters we root for. They can be good or bad. Really. Protagonists don’t need the bigger than life characteristics that heroes or heroines have. In other words\, they don’t need to be in romance novels. Join us to look at ways we can use emotion to make readers connect with the person who wants to save a child or the ranch or just tell his or her story. Emotion is the key\, even more important than the plot.\nInstructor’s Bio: \nMary has been a story teller since she could talk. As a child\, Mary made the “Let’s Pretend” games. Now she and her characters play that same game\, but her characters insist their stories are real. She taught Language Arts/English for 15 years and began writing books when she retired. SUMMARY:Making Sensory Details Make Sense - Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Description:  \nSensory details help make a good story beautiful and unforgettable or awful. The important thing about them is that we can’t just spread them around without purpose. Let’s look at ways we can add them with purpose. There are 5(or 6 grin) senses. Why is each mentioned and do we need more? \nInstructor’s Bio: \nMary has been a story teller since she could talk. SUMMARY:Small Conflicts that Move Your Story Along - Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: \nHave you ever skimmed parts of a book because nothing seemed to be happening? Have you wanted to skim parts of your own book because nothing was happening? If our stories deal only with the main story conflicts\, they will be short. \nIn this class\, we will work on ways to use small conflicts to keep a story moving. SUMMARY:The Fine Art of Killing Words: Editing for a Lean\, Mean Manuscript - Beth Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description:  \nA few years back my agent gave me what sounded like an impossible mission. Trim a 100\,000+ word manuscript to under 90\,000 words. That’s approximately 35 pages worth of words. Words I sweated to string together. Words I loved. \n“I think it will interest more editors at the shorter length\,” my agent said. Considering I’d done estimated word counts on similar books and thought that 100\,000 was on the slim side\, I was dumbfounded. I’d already edited it to death\, I thought. \nI thought wrong. \nThe thing to remember is that the marketplace changes\, but those changes frequently don’t show up at the bookstore until the manuscripts currently bought by editors make it to the bookshelves. This could be anywhere from months to a couple years away. \nIf editors were now looking for shorter stories\, so be it\, I thought and settled in for yet another set of editing sessions. \nAnd cut 11\,353 words – in five days’ time. \nOddly enough\, the manuscript I’d thought was perfect\, sang much more sweetly when I finished. \nIn four weeks\, we’ll walk this walk together\, evaluating what can go and what needs to stay\, changing verbs\, revising sentences\, giving up adverbs (hardest thing for me!)\, trimming descriptions\, catching when characters babble\, and limiting dialogue tags. And there will be show and tell examples in which I’ll give bits of what was cut or modified in some way in that manuscript that got the major trim job. \nThe Fine Art of Killing Words isn’t entirely about using the delete key\, it’s about turning out a manuscript that hits all the right notes. \nOddly enough\, ever since this major trim job\, no one has asked me for a major remodel on a manuscript. Think I might have learned my lesson well. Care to walk this walk with me to your own benefit? \nInstructor’s Bio: \nBeth Daniels has been a workshop presenter since online workshops came into their own around 2010. She is the author of 40+ novels (two due to be released in 2025)\, 10+ short stories\, 10+ novellas\, and still adding to those numbers in 2025. Currently she writes romance as Beth Henderson\, urban fantasy/mystery as J.B. Dane\, and Steampunk\, Dieselpunk and Gaslamp Fantasy mystery/comedy as Nied Darnell. That means she does one heck of a lot of word rehabilitation (both killing and changing words) in one manuscript after another while refining her product!

SUMMARY:The Postproduction Outline: Keeping Pantsers and Plantsers Alert to What's Happened and What Needs to Happen Yet! - Beth Henderson
DESCRIPTION:THE POSTPRODUCTION OUTLINE: \nKeeping Pantsers and Plantsers Alert to What’s Happened \nand What Needs to Happen Yet! \nIf you\, like me\, are a Pantser with a touch of Plantser in your system\, you’ve found there is a point when you aren’t sure what has happened that needs to be fleshed out and then wrapped up at the close of a story. \nSometimes it’s a small thing\, but sometimes it’s much larger. Particularly if you’ve given your characters some major personal changes to deal with\, or there’s a mystery to solve. Since I don’t outline\, don’t even do a free-write synopsis these days (because the story never followed any of it during creation)\, I have found that sometimes I’m not sure what’s in the story and what I considered putting in it but then didn’t. Thin dividing line at times. \nRecently\, I tried something different. A Postproduction outline. I created it when I was past the middle part but still a ways to go to hit the conclusion. It told me very briefly what I’d already put my characters through\, even comments they made that might come back to bite them\, and what sort of questions needed to be taken care of\, wrapped up\, made astonishing (!) by the final line on the last page. \nIt worked so well\, I wondered why it had taken me so many years and so many manuscripts to realize this guided me into the remaining parts of the story. Now\, I’d like to share it with you. Sound interesting? \nPresenter’s BIO:  \nBeth Daniels has had her nose to the story creation keyboard since the late 1970s. She learned her craft through numerous rewrites\, some of them starting the story over from scratch\, and that’s because the Internet was still decades from being birthed\, and the world of online workshops still further into that future. Fortunately\, her first novel was picked up for publication in 1990 and she was well practiced through turning out manuscripts (now up to 41\, though only 39 published currently) and began presenting online workshops nearly 15 years ago. She’s written under many names and in many genre niches and has found she has absolutely no conversational skills if the topic is anything other than writing genre fiction. Her family either ends up with glazed eyes or tunes her out. So short sighted of them!

SUMMARY:Wait\, What?! Writing Killer Plot Twists - Cynthia Owens
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: \nAs readers\, we all love to get into a good book with great characters and an engrossing plot line. We also like to guess what’s going to happen. But what we love most of all are those moments when you’re bowled over by some totally unexpected that you didn’t see coming\, yet when you read it\, it makes complete sense. \nIn Wait\, What?! Writing Killer Plot Twists\, you’ll learn how to write plot twists that will blow your readers’ minds and keep them turning the page. \nTopics covered in this workshop include: What is a Plot Twist?\, which defines the term\, gives the rules for how a twist should be written\, and why we should use them; how to approach a plot twist from the reader’s point of view; how to misdirect your reader with dead-ends\, false hints\, and red herrings; techniques to foreshadow your twist; how to write a twist using flashbacks; how to play upon your readers’ emotions; how to work backward to layer in hints and misdirection; and tips for writing the killer twist. \n***Included in this workshop is Your Character Workbook\, filled with resources\, worksheets\, and more!*** \nInstructor’s Bio: \nI believe I was destined to be interested in history. One of my distant ancestors\, Thomas Aubert\, reportedly sailed up the St. Lawrence River to discover Canada some 26 years before Jacques Cartier’s 1534 voyage. Another relative was a 17thCentury “King’s Girl\,” one of a group of young unmarried girls sent to New France (now the province of  Quebec) as brides for the habitants (settlers) there. \nMy passion for reading made me long to write books like the ones I enjoyed\, and I tried penning sequels to my favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. Later\, fancying myself a female version of Andrew Lloyd Weber\, I drafted a musical set in Paris during WWII. \nA former journalist and lifelong Celtophile\, I enjoyed a previous career as a reporter/editor for a small chain of community newspapers before returning to my first love\, romantic fiction. My stories usually include an Irish setting\, hero or heroine\, and sometimes all three. \nI’m the author of The Claddagh Series\, historical romances set in Ireland and beyond\, and The Wild Geese Series\, in which five Irish heroes return from the American Civil War to find love and adventure. \nI’m a member of the Romance Writers of America and Hearts Through History Romance Writers. A lifelong resident of Montreal\, Canada\, I still live there with my own Celtic hero. I have two adult children.

SUMMARY:Break Your Story Into Three - Beth Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: \nThree. It’s a magic number. \nThree is used as an element in fashion\, in art\, in interior design. It is used to present arguments to persuade others to act or respond or believe that a particular conclusion is valid. \nBut most importantly\, it is used to tell stories. \nYou might have heard of the three-act system for story structure\, but we’re going to break far more than a plot into three parts. \nBreak the Story into Threes does not require you to be a plotter. It does not require you to be an organic writer\, a pantser. It might turn you into a combination of the two\, a pantser. The goal is a comfortable template of your own where simple guidelines keep the story flowing once you key those first words on page one. \nWe’ll talk chapter setups\, POVs\, what some call “beats” but I consider percentage spots in the word count where something needs to occur. Character types\, scene blocking\, and more! It’s amazing the number of things that break into three elements! \nAre you ready to venture forth into this forest of Threes? \nInstructor’s BIO: \nBeth Daniels’ career as a published writer of fiction\, specifically a novelist\, is over 30 years long now. She’s written under various pseudonyms for various traditional publishing houses and in a variety of genres and niches within those genres\, spinning tales of romantic comedy (both adult and YA)\, romantic suspense (both contemporary and historical)\, cozy mystery\, urban fantasy PI mystery comedy\, and done so in both series setups and as single titles. Her 40th novel releases in 2025. But Beth also has taught Novel Writing as a college credit course\, a continuing education one\, and since 2010 as online workshops that get 5* reviews as often as her novels land those 5* reviews\, which is very\, very often. She’s won awards as both Beth Henderson (romance) and J.B. Dane (urban fantasy) and is one of the founders of a critique group in the small town where she currently lives. SUMMARY:Stuck in the Middle: Getting From Set-Up to The End 2-Week Intensive Workshop - Tere Michaels
DESCRIPTION:Stuck in the Middle: Getting From Set-Up to The End \nThis class focuses specifically on the middle of your story\, the bulk of the action that takes place after the set-up and builds up until you reach your “disembarking point” and the book’s ending. \nHow do you crank up conflict and emotion without writing yourself into a corner? \nHow do you fulfill the promise of your beginning (and your blurb)\, to deliver the book you’ve promised readers? \nHow do you keep readers emotionally engaged without having to use tricks and red herrings to make sure those pages keep turning? \nWhatever your process—from highly detailed outlines to seat-of-your-pants writing\, and everything in between—this class will help you build a framework for a successful\, satisfying book. We will map out the high points (and low points) of the middle of your book. We will discuss how your “midpoint” is not exactly in the middle\, nor does it indicate one moment in time. And we’ll help you decide precisely how to shake up the world you’ve created (so you can fix it in time for the end). \nInstructor Bio: \nTere Michaels writes happily ever afters in the big city – with heaps of snark\, angst and humor. Her focus is on characters and all the ridiculous ways they trip through life and love. She has written fifteen books including her popular Faith\, Love & Devotion series\, and the superhero saga\, The Vigilante. \nShe has been presenting workshops on the writing process for over ten years.

SUMMARY:Edits to Your Story That Aren't About Grammar - Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Editing Is about More than Grammar and Punctuation. \nEdits to Your Story that AREN’T about Grammar and Punctuation.  We will explore elements to look for in our books and ways to go back to the beginning after we think the story is over and make sure the end works or if we need to add details earlier or delete things that don’t work. At this point\, we might be looking at revisions instead of just editing. \n  \nBIO \nMary has been a story teller since she could talk. As a child\, Mary made the “Let’s Pretend” games. Now she and her characters play that same game\, but her characters insist their stories are real. She taught Language Arts/English for 15 years and began writing books when she retired. She is Georgia bred and Georgia raised and wouldn’t live anywhere else. The times she tried she missed her southern roots. Mary’s daughter is her best project! \nMary aims at readers’ heart strings and loves to tease with sensuous scenes. Mary edits for freelance clients.  She Indie published 10 novels\, a collection of Christmas stories\, and a grammar book. \nTeaching online classes and giving workshops makes Mary’s inner teacher happy. Helping folks take their ideas and turn them into books pleases Mary’s inner writer and her inner teacher. For the past 10 years Mary had edited both memoirs and how-to books. \nMary has presented workshops with HHRW\, OIWI/Outreach International\, FF&P\, Savvy Authors\, A2P\, Walton Writers\, and for East Metro Atlanta Christian Writers\, Moonlight & Magnolias conference\, and The Southern Pen Indie Conference. \nAs a freelance editor\, Mary has edited more than 80 books in different genres\, including detective novels\, memoirs\, and how-to books.

SUMMARY:Writing Historical Romantic Suspense - Beth Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Those of us who loved history class…maybe even\, like me\, snapped up a college degree in history\, planned all vacations around museums\, castles (ruins and not ruins)\, ancient sites (Stonehenge\, vanished pre-European period native American cultures)\, ghost towns\, tours of historic homes\, or volunteered at local historical places\, or attended reenactments and Renaissance Faires…well\, we can never get enough history in our diet\, can we? \nEven if you haven’t done these things\, you could feel the lure of mystery. And history is if full of unsolved mysteries. They might have found Richard III at long last\, but whether or not he was responsible for the disappearance of his two young nephews from the Tower is still hanging ten. H.H. Holmes was caught but Jack the Ripper’s identification is still in contention. And those are just the two best known unsolved mysteries to most of us. There are plenty of others. \nBut it doesn’t take an actual event – though it could – to write a story set in a historical time period where sleuths are numbered in the main cast members. \nThe title of this workshop covers many different ways in which a historical setting and a mystery can be presented in sync. Whether you want to change history (as alternative allows you to do in various ways\, just jump in your time machine) or insert characters into an earlier era and give them a crime to deal with or a crime in the making if someone is hunting them\, or use actual historical personages – or not – in a real historic mystery setting…well\, this workshop will touch on them all. \nThere’s a balance to be preserved no matter which kind of tale you mix mystery and history together in\, and it changes slightly with each niche\, and with whether the story will be a standalone or part of a series. Why not join me to sort out what you already have and what you may need to gather further research on or simply dream up. We’ll do it all in 4 short weeks. \nPresenter’s BIO: Beth Daniels snagged a BA in History and started on an MA before she moved to a different state and found they didn’t have a program that was what she’d been specializing on and switched to a MA in English Composition and Rhetoric with an Emphasis on Creative Writing. At the time she already had more published books than all the professors in the English Department combined\, though hers were in genre fiction\, which they sneered at. Typical. In any case\, she has stirred mystery into all her historical romantic adventures (as Beth Henderson) and made it the main focus in her Covert Cogs Weird West Steampunk tales\, her 1920s Dieselpunk stories\, and Gaslamp Fantasy inquiry agent shorts (as Nied Darnell)\, but also writes contemporary urban fantasy mystery comedy series (as J.B. Dane)

SUMMARY:Ripping Hearts and Engaging Minds: Writing Angst Effectively - Tere Michaels
DESCRIPTION:Ripping Hearts and Engaging Minds: Writing Angst Effectively \nSome people are angst junkies. They like their stories chock full of heart-ripping drama and trauma. Others like their angst just a delicate sprinkling on their story\, nothing too intense. What do these two extremes have in common? Angst (at whatever level) only works when it fits your characters\, and your story\, and the resolution rewards your reader for their journey to the end! \nIn this workshop\, we’ll talk about internal and external trauma\, how much is enough/too much\, what tone you’re going for and how to use angst effectively\, and most importantly\, how to write a satisfying ending. \nInstructor Bio: \nTere Michaels writes happily ever afters in the big city – with heaps of snark\, angst and humor. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn to make memes\, use templates\, or create videos to promote your books? Want to make your own covers? \nOIWI is excited to share a new workshop using Stencil\, Bookbrush\, and Canva. This month-long workshop will be interactive with one weekly Zoom and a groups io classroom for instruction and questions. \nEach week we will have four people (first come first serve) send a book cover to oiwi1965@gmail.com which will be used to make memes live. \nThose memes will be sent back to the owners! \nThe week for book covers and videos we will randomly select one person to be featured. \nAll three programs used in this workshop have free editions\, which won’t be quite as great as the paid versions\, but should be enough to get you started. \nThis workshop will be recorded and the link will be available to attendees. \nBio: \nFor the last few years Melba Moon has created all the promotional memes\, mockups\, and videos for OIWI. You may have seen some of her renderings on OIWI’s Facebook page. \nShe writes historical romantic suspense and contemporary romance. She lives in Georgia with her husband on one spoiled demanding little Pomeranian named Rowdy. She is active on both Kindle Vella and Kindle Unlimited. Her latest releases are The Highwayman’s Lady\, an historical romantic suspense and Remember Laura\, a contemporary romance with time travel\, ghostly interference\, star-crossed lovers and the enemies to lovers trope.

SUMMARY:Gut Punch: Using Emotional Conflict as Plot Intensive 2-week Workshop - Tere Michaels
DESCRIPTION:Gut Punch: Using Emotional Conflict as Plot \nWhen we start writing\, we have an idea of how our readers will react to our stories. Do we want them to laugh? Cry? Gasp? Compose angry letters in their heads because how dare we? And what is the key to making that happen in the story? We create our characters and their internal journeys with this in mind\, then we place them in a plot that we hope will get the point across. (And get everyone – them and the readers – to the satisfying end of the book.)\n\nYour plot is the vehicle your characters use to experience and move through their Arcs. The plot is about how they learn and grow (fall then rise) or lose their way (rise then fall). Even if your book is about People Feeling Things\, there has to be some plot that ignites the change they go through.\n\nThis workshop will discuss the ways to use Emotional Conflict – your characters’ inner life – to plot your story. How do we select the right vehicle for these characters? How do we use their internal conflicts to reflect an exterior plot to get them where they need to be? We’ll examine the difference between internal conflict and external trauma and how they can bring a reader closer to the character – or drive them away. The end goal as always is – to gather the tools you need to write your best book!

SUMMARY:Make Your Suspense Keep Readers on the Edge of Their Chairs 2-week Intensive workshop- Mary Marvella
DESCRIPTION:Writing Suspense to Keep Your Readers on the Edge of Their Seats. \n(This applies to everything we write.) \nHave you ever picked up a book\, planning to read a chapter? Could you stop at one chapter? I have stayed up all night more than once because the writers had me in their clutches! \nWe writers often tell way too much when we write\, so we interrupt the action and allow readers to walk away for a while. Let’s look at editing away the stuff that doesn’t involve our readers to create that final draft readers can’t put down! \nInstructor Bio: \nMary Marvella has been a storyteller for as long as she can remember. The arrival of the book mobile was as exciting as hearing the music of the ice cream truck. As a child of the South\, she inherited the storytelling gene from her parents and her grandmamas. \nRetired from teaching classic works of the masters\, Mary plays let’s pretend with her characters. She has published 10 novels\, 1 book on editing\, and a collection of Christmas stories. \nMary tutors\, and coaches writers when she isn’t working on projects as a freelance editor.  She has always been a grammar geek who loved soaking up new knowledge and reading everything\, including labels on cereal boxes. \nGeorgia-raised\, she writes stories with a Southern flair. \nMary has taught workshops for Georgia Romance Writers\, Northeast Metro Atlanta Christian Writers\, Savvy Authors\, Hearts through History (RWA) and FF&P (RWA)\, and The Southern Pen Indie Conference. Mary loves teaching so much she published a book called Weeding of Your Manuscript: What Editors Wish You Knew
